Canoes and Cleanups Project Tackles Chicago River Trash: Photos

Friends' inaugural Canoes and Cleanups initiative sold out, attracting dozens of people to River Park, 5100 N Francisco Ave. in Chicago, on May 25th.

For the affordable price of $10, this program of our Litter Free Chicago River project is  a fun way to get involved in canoeing and help remove the trash while you're paddling. We provide the canoes, the equipment, and the know-how. You provide the can-do spirit. At River Park, participants were able to remove many bags of trash out of the North Branch and North Shore Channel while having a terrific time on the water, too.

Litter is devastating to wildlife and a deterrent to people. But with your help, we can rid our beautiful waterway of this scourge.

"It was great to see how many people enjoyed this experience. Together we can study the sources of our aquatic pollution and work to clean it up," said Friends' Director of Strategic Initiatives Joanne So Young Dill, who led the group.

Offered monthly, Canoes and Cleanups requires no paddling experience to participate. Friends' trusty canoe guides help participants safely load in and out of the boats, offer paddling tips, and answer questions about the river along the way.

The next Canoes and Cleanups outing is scheduled for Saturday, June 29 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. This one will leave from the REI Goose Island dock at

905 W. Eastman, Chicago. Other dates are July 20, August 31, September 21, and October 19.
