Contact your State Senator to Ban Polystyrene in Illinois
Help protect the Chicago-Calumet River system from plastic pollution by urging the Illinois Senate to pass a statewide polystyrene ban under consideration now in the fall veto session in Springfield. Passage of this vital bill would phase out single-use polystyrene foam foodware in Illinois, helping reduce plastic and foam pollution in our waterways and communities.
Polystyrene is a synthetic plastic that is not recyclable, compostable, or biodegradable. Studies show that 80% of trash in our rivers is plastic, with most of it from food packaging. This pollution harms wildlife, contaminates drinking water, and threatens our river ecosystems.
Friends of the Chicago River, along with over 35 organizations, is part of the Coalition for Plastic Reduction, championing this bill to protect our waterways.
Illinois has already passed legislation to phase out single-use foam foodware in state facilities by 2025. In the spring, the Illinois House passed the bill to take this crucial ban statewide. Now, we’re calling on the Illinois Senate to take this legislation to the finish line.
